Measure Your Space
The first thing you need to know is how big you want your rug to be. Do you want it to cover the whole space? If not, where do you want it to stop? When it comes to an outdoor space like a patio, you probably want the rug to stop about a foot from the edge of the paving stones. If your rug is too close to the edge, it will get filthy quickly if it actually touches the ground. With a deck or screened-in porch, the rug can fill more of the space. It is in no danger of coming into contact with the ground, so it can completely fill the area if you want it to.
Match Your Color Scheme
Rugs are practical, but they are also there to look good. If you already have a color scheme with furnishings and decor, you’ll want to match the rug to what you already have. Don’t have an established color scheme yet? Now is the time to create one around your rug. A white or ivory and aqua scheme creates a beachy feel. Yellow, black, and white make for a fun backyard vibe. If you prefer something more subdued, you can’t go wrong with earth tones.
Make It Easy to Clean
Another thing you need to consider is whether the rug is easy to clean. Most outdoor and indoor-outdoor rugs are made of synthetic materials that are stain-resistant. To keep dirt from working its way into the rug, run the vacuum over it when you’re cleaning the rest of your house, or shake it out. If something spills on it, a spot treatment will get it right out. Is it really dirty by the end of the summer? If it’s made of material that is water-resistant or fast-drying, take it out to your driveway and hose it down!
